Business Automation – RPA or BPM

Business Automation
Both RPA and BPM help businesses drive efficiency and productivity. However, there are some distinct differences in how these approaches deliver the benefits.

Business Process Management (BPM)
Business Process Management (BPM) also referred to as Business Process Automation is a methodology used by businesses to find, optimize and automate business processes. BPM is transformative in nature and leads to reengineered processes that are streamlined and integrated.

Robotic Process Automation (RPA)
Robotic Process Automation (RPA) is the use of specialized software with artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) capabilities designed to handle high-volume, repeatable tasks that are typically performed by humans. Including such tasks as; data entry, queries, calculations, applying rules and logic, maintenance of records etc. To learn more about RPA, see our RPA 101 blog.

RPA and BPM working together
On the surface it may seem RPA and BPM are conflicting approaches however, in reality the two approaches compliment each other and drive even more value for the organization. Setting aside cost and time restrictions, a process should always be optimized before it is automated using RPA. In more general terms, RPA can help enhance the benefits gained by BPM.

As organizations approach 100% integration and automation, the costs increase exponentially as a result, some manual intervention remains in the end to end process. RPA is ideal for bridging that gap to increase the level of automation while keeping costs in check.
